There will be a lecture at the Congregational Church on Sunday evening next on the Subject of '"Crime and the means of its prevention." Drafts. Col. Teal received last week the drafts of the Pittsburg lock gates, which are to be used in the Locks at this plaeo. They are said to be the best in use. Crowded Oct. We have received a communication in relation to the road re cently located from the paper mill up the Clackamas. We regret it is crowded out this week. It will appear next. Peusonai.. Col. Joseph Teal was in towty last Tuesday. The abuse of the Radical press has had no effect on the Cul, Imsoontim :ei. The postoffiee at Cut tingsville, in this county has been discon tinued. Changed Hakim. The Cliff House changed hands this week. We have not learned who the new landlord is. Called Gov. Curry- gave us a call last Tuesday, The Titorni.E. It is astonishing to observe how the negro element has rushed to Washington since LS CO. When the census was taken in 1SG0. there were thirteen thousand negroes in the District of Columbia; about one fifth of the entire population. In 1S70. the negroes in the District number forty four thousand, nearly one. hall of the people. The largest portion of the negro popula tion are adults and voters, and are con trolled by a species of carpet bargers that managed to plunge the City of Wash ington into a debt of live millions in one year. Most of the money has gone into the pockets of the contractors, the negro only getting wages for 'daily labor on the streets. These abuses are undergoing in vestigation $by a congressional commit tee, and the disclosures exhibit a terrible corrupt state of ail'airs on the part of ndical officials. But it is ever thus where Radicalism rules. What Dax.v Proved. Whilst Radical papers are all claiming that Mr. Dana has proved absolutely noshing against Secre tary Robeson, the X. Y. San claims that he has proved that the Secretary has made, in the most flagrant violation of a perfectly plain statute of the United fctates. the following payments : One of over Ninety Thousand Dollars. One of Twenty-five Thousand Dollars. One of Twenty-Three Thousand Dol lars. Mr. Bana has also proved that Secre tary Robeson made large contracts for iron, privately, without advertising, when there was no haste oremergeucy to justify or excuse him. at extravagant and exces sive rates, paying for it a. much larger sum than he might have got it for. Much of the evidence introduced by Mr. Dana was documentary, from the ar chives of the liepju-smeiit. Much of it was wrung from the lips of reluctant and unwilling witnesses, some of them trem bling in their shoes from tear of offending the power on which they felt themselves to be dependent. IBs Dei-exdexce. Some idea of the dauntless -Bread and Butter Brigade' upon which Gen. Grint depends for re nomination and re-election, may be gath ered from the Detroit Free Press, which says that nobie army of self saci iacing patriots '-consists of about thirty-one thousand postmasters ; seventeen thou sand under the command of the Treasury Department, with a Signal Corps of three thousand more, under different leaders making in all. fifty-one thousand noble pairif ts, who demand that Grant shall be kept in power in order (hat they may cou li.'iue to hold office and serve the co'untry for their own gjod. This number does not include the members of Congress who are dependent upon (be breath of ihe Executive avor for their future polit ical existence, through the control of the appointments in the districts. It does not include the license spies who go about plund-riiig individuals under pretense of law. but who are all devoted to the cause of Grant, because Grant and offi cial rascality seem to be identified in aim and intent. This army of office-holders propose to dictate what shall be the po litical action of the people iu the selec tion of a President. Souxo Oi ixiox.s. A game S rath Caro linian writes to Ulysess. thusly; '-Under the pharisaical pretense of iet us have peace,' you resume war upon South Car olina. You publish your declaration of war; renew the struggle we thought clos ed at Appoma tox. Von send your sol diers. on make war upon peaceful com munities; and beneath the folds of your stats and stripe--, yon allow thieves, rob bers and incendiaries to find shelter and safety. You cannot, if you regard your fame, retire from this campaign against your countrymen: for in prosecuting war upon South Carolina, yuu menace every otier poacable State on the continent. Our cause is now every freeman's cause.'' Cnowtxa Jcstieiable. -The Chicago Post is of the opinion that the Democracy has not done much in carrying Cincinnati and St. Louis by sweeping majorities. In asmuch, remarks the St. Louis limes, as those two cities embrace a much larger population than the entire State of Con necticut, and their combined Democratic majority is about fifty times as large as the majority for Jewell, we are of the opinion that a little crowing. is justifiable. The "difference is suggestive for other rea sons in one case the result was fairly achieved ; iu the other it -was bought with money. No 'Passive' At hit ok. Mr. Belmont the Chairman of the National Committee of the Democratic party, has just issued a circular summoning the members of the Committee to meet at his residence, in New York, on Wednesday, the 8th of May. ' The purpose of this meeting is well understood to be to fix the day and place for holding the Democratic National Convention to nominate, candidates for President and Vice President of the L nited States. Voted Dowx. Grant was defeated in the late Convention of negroes in Massa chusetts held for the purpose of choosing delegates to the National Negro Conven tion now in session in New Orleans. At an early stage in the proceedings, a reso lution endorsing, in a mild manner, the Grant Officeholders' Convention to be held it: Philadelphia, was offered but it was promptly voted down by a consider able majority. Ix Trouble. The Radical county can didates have evidently been in trouble this week. They have been congregated in corners and out-of-the-way places" and emerged wilh-elonirated faces, as though all was not right. There is a small ;zed volcano .getting ready to emerge from' the bosom ot our truly loyal friends. Public Spcakiu HON, GEO. R. "Who does not remcmb -r the time when spring purgation was considered indispens able to siimmer health? No matter for wrv faces, the inevitable salts and senna, rhu barb, or calomel and jalap, must be admin istered. These '-spring medicines," the youngsters were told, were to make them hale aud hearty during the summer. We all know now that tlvs was a fulacy: that new vigor, not depletion, is what is requir ed at the commencement of the summer soistice. As a preparation fur the enervat ing effects of opprtSMve summer weather a course of ilostttter's Stomach Bitters is highly expedient. This fam us vegetable lots three prominent prop,-! ties: It reno vates, purities and regulates all ihe tunc tiotisof i lie body. It is composed exclusive ly of pure vegetable production, via:' the essential principle of Monomrahela live, and the most etli -acious tome and alternative roots. b:irks, and gums known to medical botauis e. Hence, it is an absolutely sate medicine, and no tincture of the Pharmaco poeia can cosnpare with it either in purity, or iu the variety of its oi.jects, and its com prehensive results. Happily for mankind, the theory that it was necessary to p.stra'e a patient in order to cttie him, is forever exploded, and the true philosophical doc trine that vigor is the great antagonist of disease, has taken its place. Jlo.stetter's Bitters is an invigoraat, and hence it is the proper medicine tor the feeble at tLis most trying season of the year. Be sure that you obtain the genuiue arti cle, as thee are innumerable vile imitations in the market. No Pill ix Thk Would ever had anything like the circulation of A vers 1'ini.s. Throughout these States, Mexico, and the Central American republics, d iwn thcslopts of the Andes, and across the pampas of South America, in negro villages, amid the fervid wdds of Al'r.ca, throughout the jun gles of India, and the steppes ot'iuteiior Asia, over the continent, of Australia, and the islands of the Pacific, these 1'ills are knewn and everywhere used as family rem edies for diseases. With d.stant nations their wonderful cure attract more attention than tliej do at home: for the sentiment ot wonder lakes a deeper hold on their mind-, than the results of a high scientific skill with us. The amount consumed requires seventy-five thousand doses a day to supply it. An inspection of the manu'actory stio w ed us how this enormous demand is made and sustained.
